Best Destinations to Hit When Backpacking Through Europe

Best Destinations to Hit When Backpacking Through Europe

Backpacking around Europe is a rite of passage when you are in college, or any time in your life for that matter.  If you want to get out of the tourist traps and see the real Europe then this is the way to go.  You can visit all of the world famous sites and meet some great people along the way, but Europe is massive and your time may be limited so here are the best destinations to hit when backpacking through Europe.

If you are coming from North America then chances are London is the closest and easiest destination.  It’s also a great historic city with plenty to see and do.  You need to go see Buckingham Palace, especially during the changing of the guard.  After that you will want to hit some of the landmarks like Westminster Abbey, The Tower of London and Piccadilly Circus.  London has lots to see, so map out your trip ahead of time so you can see everything you want to.

From London you want to take the train to Paris just so you can say you have been through the “chunnel”.  Paris, is much like London in that there is so much to see you may have trouble fitting everything in.  Start with the Eiffel Tower and of course The Louvre and at some point you will want to have lunch in one of the outdoor cafes on the Left Bank where you can have wine, cheese and bread (French staples).  Notre Dame Cathedral and the Sacre Coeur Basilica are also incredible examples of Gothic architecture that are impressive.

After you leave Paris then you should make your way over to Berlin.  It is a perfect blend of old and new Europe, with castles and modern architecture it really is a city like no other.  For the history lover’s you need to go to the Brandenburg Gate, which once divided East and West Germany and now stands as a symbol of the unification.  It really is a place to have some fun, great food and an awesome experience.

Cinque Terre

If you have had enough of the big cities and want to see what small town Europe has to offer then these 5 towns on the west coast of Italy are idyllic.  You can find colorful buildings, beaches and some natural cliffs.  You can get a day pass for the trains that will allow you to get around all five towns as often as you like.  The place is absolutely picturesque, but it can also be filled with tourists.  Don’t forget to try the local cuisine…it is to die for!

There are dozens of destinations throughout Europe that are worth seeing aside from those above.  Before you head off, plan which ones are on your must-see list and plan accordingly.
